I've always found photographing moorhens difficult as they tend to be extremely shy birds and keep their distance. Recently I've located some that are so fearless they come within a few feet. It could be that people come regularly to the pond with their children to feed the wildlife, but I doubt that is the only reason because the moorhens on my local pond get fed regularly too and rarely come so close.
As friendly as the adults are they are very protective of their young and when I last visited were still keeping them protected near the overhanging branches of the tree they were nesting under. The tree does hand right down with branches touches the water. Hence a lot of the shots were taken in very shady conditions, and the light was poor on both days I visited.
